Removing unnecessary local administrative access is good security, but disabling accounts without understanding their purpose can lock out support or damage services.

A practical target state

  • Employees use standard accounts for daily work.
  • Unneeded interactive local users are disabled or removed.
  • Built-in Guest remains disabled, and built-in Administrator is not used for routine work.
  • One uniquely named local recovery administrator is retained for emergency use.

Protect the recovery account

  • Use a unique password per workstation and store it in a clinic-controlled vault or sealed break-glass record.
  • Do not use the account for browsing, email, daily support, or software installs when normal administrative methods work.
  • Test access before deployment and rotate the password after emergency use.
  • Use Windows LAPS when the clinic’s management capabilities support it.

Do not disable blindly

  • Windows system identities and service accounts are not ordinary employee sign-in accounts.
  • Inventory accounts and dependencies before changing them.
  • Document what was disabled, what remains, and how recovery is performed.

Practical note: Technology, licensing, vendor capabilities, and regulatory obligations vary. Confirm the clinic’s current configuration before making changes.

Least privilege

Employees should normally use standard accounts. Local administrator rights allow software installation, security-setting changes, credential extraction, and actions that can affect every user of the device.

Recovery design

Keep one uniquely named, secured local break-glass administrator, disable unnecessary interactive local accounts, and leave required Windows system identities alone. Store the password in a clinic-controlled vault and rotate it after use.

Ongoing review

Inventory local group membership, remove former employees and unknown accounts, test the recovery identity, and use Windows LAPS or another managed rotation method where supported.
