Synchronization is not the same as independent backup
OneDrive provides valuable synchronization, version history, and recycle-bin capabilities, but those features do not automatically satisfy every recovery need. Deletions, account problems, ransomware, retention limits, or configuration mistakes can still create risk.
Questions a clinic should answer
- Which files are actually stored in OneDrive or SharePoint?
- How long are deleted items and versions retained?
- Who can restore data, and has restoration been tested?
- Are local application databases, scanner folders, or shared drives excluded?
- What happens if the Microsoft tenant or administrator account is unavailable?
Build recovery around the actual systems
A backup plan should identify critical data, retention expectations, independent copies where appropriate, restoration responsibilities, and a tested recovery process.
